An ingrown toenail occurs when the edge of a toenail grows into the surrounding skin, causing pain, swelling, and sometimes infection.
Children may get it due to tight-fitting footwear or improper cutting of toenails. Teenagers and young adults often develop ingrown toenails as they sweat more. In older people, ingrown toenails are common as they may be too inflexible to care for their feet. Toenails may also tend to get thicker with age and become more difficult to cut.

In the early stages of an ingrown toenail, a podiatrist may perform a “slant back cut” and monitor nail growth. If nails are naturally curved, a special brace can be used to guide proper nail growth and prevent recurrence. In more severe cases, a Nail Avulsion may be needed to remove part or all of the affected nail, with options to prevent future nail growth in the problem area.
